Demetria Chappo is an artist, ceramist, and educator who creates ceramic sculptures, art/objects, functional tableware and home decor. Her latest body of work speaks to her ongoing celebration of nature, its movement, energy, and transformation which she explores in form, expressive textural elements and using clay as canvas. She is inspired by natural landscapes, the resonance of water, and the play between earth materials and the cosmos.

Her Smoke Collection is open-air fired using sawdust, wood, and other natural materials, to create dramatic surfaces indelibly marked by flame, smoke, and chance.
The new Thalassa and Xora Series of wall art, tiles, sculptures and vessels captures the felt presence of place, calling of the sea and earth’s natural formations, influenced by travels to national parks and walks closer to home along rivers, canyons and ridges.

In her studio in New York’s Hudson Valley where every piece is handmade, Chappo appreciates a process-driven approach, handbuilding by coiling, pinching and slab forms, or throwing on the potter’s wheel then firing into ceramic capturing the tactile magic of clay in surface and form.
